Maria spent her childhood at Groveland in her hometown, where she was raised by her father, who worked as a salesman, and her mother, a beauty salon designer. Maria suffered a stroke when she was only three years old, but to no permanent effect. Upon matriculation from Boston High school, she enrolled at the Umass Amherst College, from which she graduated with a degree in journalism, then continued her education at Emerson College, where she earned her MA degree in mass communication.

Career Beginnings

Maria worked as a waitress during her college years, but soon after she got her degree, she started on radio, as a news reporter for such stations as WABC, WBUR, WNBC Radio and WCBS, among others. She was slowly building knowledge and experience needed for a further career, and it was in 1997 that she made her first breakthrough when she was recruited by Fox25 News Television to work as a general assignment reporter. Gradually her career was improving, and she joined Boston’s WFXT-TV where she was to be a news anchor and reporter for nearly eighteen years.
