Who’s Young Thug?

Jeffery Lamar Williams, better known by his stage name Young Thug, was born on the 16th August 1991 in Atlanta, Georgia, USA and is a singer, songwriter and record producer but is probably best as a rapper, and for releasing such mixtapes as “Barter 6”, “Jeffery”, “Super Slimey” and such hit singles as “Stoner”, “Check” and “Pick Up The Phone”.

Early Life and Childhood

Young Thug was raised the tenth of eleven children, and spent his childhood in the Jonesboro South projects in his hometown, a neighborhood which spawned a number of rappers, including Waka Flocka Flame, 2 Chainz, Ludacris and PeeWee Longway. During his teenage years, Williams was expelled from school when in the sixth grade, and sent to juvenile prison where he spent 14 months.

Career Beginnings

Speaking about his professional career, it began in 2011, when he adopted his, perhaps appropriate stage name, and released the first three volumes of his mixtape series, entitled “I Came From Nothing”. Following these releases, Young Thug caught the attention of famous rap artist, Gucci Mane, who in 2013 signed him to his record label 1017 Brick Squad Records, which marked the beginning of his popularity. That year he released his first big project and his fourth mixtape entitled “1017 Thug”, which gained many positive reviews from music critics, praising him for his original and unique style. In addition, it was included in several ‘best-of’ lists and albums for 2013, most notable being Pitchfork Albums of the Year: Honorable Mention and Complex’s The 50 Best Albums of 2013. Thug also received praise from Rolling Stone magazine and The Guardian for his accomplishments. In the same year, he released two non-album singles, “2 Bitches” and “Stoner”, which were certified gold by the RIAA. Both of these singles met with critical success too, and were remixed by other artists including Waka Flocka Flame, Nicky Minaj, Jim Jones and Jadakiss. Furthermore, he was heard on a few tracks on Metro Boomin’s album “19 & Boomin”, and performed at Fool’s Gold Day Off show held in Miami, alongside fellow rappers Danny Brown, Trick Daddy and Travis Scott.
