Career: From an Intern to an Anchor

Cari’s career began while she was in her junior college year, having studied in Washington D.C. at the time, at which point she obtained an internship at CNN. She took up her first reporting job in West Virginia. When interviewed about working there, she said: ‘I was a one-man-band carrying a camera and a tripod and that was God-awful. But I loved it because I wanted to do it. I always wanted to be a reporter.’ She later became a reporter at the Orange County Newschannel in Santa Ana, California, after which she joined WPTV-TV in West Palm Beach, Florida in 2002. After a few years, she started working as an anchor for WCGL-TV in Atlanta, from where she was eventually fired in 2007, for allegedly uttering a profanity on-air. She appealed the firing, and stated in an interview that the floor director forgot to cue her and her co-anchor after a commercial break, while they were addressing a certain mechanical screenwriter: ‘I called the screenwriter a ‘mothersucka’ not the f-bomb.’ She was hired again in January 2008, but she soon quit and moved to Florida for a better salary. While there, she conducted several interviews with tennis players, which resulted in her newfound affinity for the sport. She joined the Tennis Channel in 2009 as a courtside reporter, which she remained in until 2012, when she joined ESPN as the host of ESPN2’s “First Take.” Since the 12th of March 2018, Cari is the official co-host of ESPN’s “SportsNation.”
