Early Life and Education

Cole was born at an American military base in Frankfurt, Germany, where his father was serving in the US Army, and his mother working for the US Postal Service. However, his father left the family when Cole was still a boy, so he moved with his mother and brother to Fayetteville, North Carolina, USA. During his youth, he was very interested in basketball and music, and he played the violin for the Terry Sanford Orchestra until 2003.

At the age of 12, Cole discovered his passion for rap music, after which he realized that a musical career was the perfect choice for him. He worked simultaneously on improving his rapping and his production skills, and started collaborating with local group Bomm Sheltuh, as both rapper and producer. Upon matriculation from Terry Sanford High School, he enrolled in St. John’s University in New York City majoring in Computer Science, before switching to Communication and Business, graduating magna cum laude in 2007. Prior to beginning his professional career in the music industry, Cole worked a number of part-time jobs.

Career Beginnings

Cole began his career in the music industry by releasing his debut mixtape “The Come Up” in May of 2007, on which he collaborated with such musicians as Just Blaze, Large Professor and Kanye West. Two years later out came his second mixtape, entitled “The Warm Up”, which received positive reviews and led him to be featured in various projects, including Jay Z’s song “A Star Is Born” as well as Wale’s mixtape “Back To The Future” and studio album “Attention Deficit”. In 2010, he recorded the mixtape “Friday Night Lights” as well as the non-album single “Who Dat”, and started working on his debut studio album.
