Early Life and Education
At the age of 12, Cole discovered his passion for rap music, after which he realized that a musical career was the perfect choice for him. He worked simultaneously on improving his rapping and his production skills, and started collaborating with local group Bomm Sheltuh, as both rapper and producer. Upon matriculation from Terry Sanford High School, he enrolled in St. John’s University in New York City majoring in Computer Science, before switching to Communication and Business, graduating magna cum laude in 2007. Prior to beginning his professional career in the music industry, Cole worked a number of part-time jobs.

Career Beginnings
Cole began his career in the music industry by releasing his debut mixtape “The Come Up” in May of 2007, on which he collaborated with such musicians as Just Blaze, Large Professor and Kanye West. Two years later out came his second mixtape, entitled “The Warm Up”, which received positive reviews and led him to be featured in various projects, including Jay Z’s song “A Star Is Born” as well as Wale’s mixtape “Back To The Future” and studio album “Attention Deficit”. In 2010, he recorded the mixtape “Friday Night Lights” as well as the non-album single “Who Dat”, and started working on his debut studio album.
Rise to Fame
Cole’s breakthrough came in September of 2011, when he released via Roc Nation and Columbia record labels his debut studio album entitled “Cole World: The Sideline Story”, which topped the US Billboard 200, Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums and Top Rap Albums charts, adding a considerable amount to his net worth, as it was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), and spawned such hit singles as “Work Out”, “Nobody’s Perfect” featuring Missy Elliott and “Can’t Get Enough” featuring Trey Songz.

During the same year, he started working on his second studio album – “Born Sinner” – which was finally released in 2013, and debuted at No. 1 on the US Billboard 200, Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums and Top Rap Albums charts, with four official singles “Crooked Smile”, “Forbidden Fruit”, “Power Trip” and “She Knows”. Parallel with that, he also released two EPs – “Truly Yours” and “Truly Yours 2”, increasing further his popularity.
Cole continued to line up successes, and in January of 2014 he released his fourth mixtape, entitled “Revenge Of The Dreamers”. Moreover, his third studio album “2014 Forest Hills Drive” out came in December of the same year, which achieved two times platinum certifications by the RIAA, and peaked at No. 1 on the US Billboard 200, Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums and Top Rap Albums charts.

Dreamville Records
In addition to his involvement in the music industry as a hip hop artist, in early 2007 J Cole established his own record label called Dreamville Records, alongside his manager Ibrahim Hamad. The debut Dreamville Records release was his own mixtape “The Warm Up” in 2009, after which he produced his own studio album – “Born Sinner” – with Roc Nation and Columbia. In the forthcoming years, the label signed such artists as Omen, Cozz, Ari Lennox and Earth Gang, and produced such albums as Cozz’s “Cozz & Effect” (2014), Omen’s “Elephant Eyes” (2015) and J.I.D’s “The Never Story” (2017).
