After completing her masters, she began her career with the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) at the Directorate of Intelligence, where she worked as an analyst focusing on Middle Eastern leadership issues, which lead her to become the media spokesperson on the subject for the CIA. During the 2012 presidential election, it was reported that she helped US President Barack Obama’s national security and communications strategy, serving as the campaign spokesperson regarding national security issues.

Government and Commentary Work

In 2013, Harf was assigned as Deputy Spokesperson for the Department of the State serving under Jen Psaki. Two years later, she got into a controversy during an interview on the show “Hardball with Chris Matthews”, when she was questioned regarding US strategy against the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS). Rather than addressing the issue directly, she went on to talk about giving job opportunities for people, which led to critics ridiculing her on social media. The interview was released a day before an ISIS video showing the beheading of 21 Egyptian Coptic Christians in Libya.

Two years later, Harf was interviewed for the position of Spokesperson for the Department of State, but lost out to retiring US Navy Rear Admiral John Kirby – the two had previously battled for another spokesperson position at the US Department of Defense, but it was deemed that an experienced military public affairs officer would serve better compared to a civilian political appointee. After leaving her role as Acting Spokesperson, she began to work for Secretary of State John Kerry as Senior Advisor, including leading the Iran nuclear negotiations communications strategy. In 2017, she started working as a political commentator with the Fox News Channel.

For her personal life, it is known that Marie married Joshua Lucas in 2012, in Vienna at the Vienna Presbyterian Church attended by friends and family members; they were also wed by a long-time friend of the couple who is also an Anglican priest.
