Jordan Belfort’s Stock Trading Fraud

Still in his 20s, Jordan Belfort founded Stratton Oakmont brokerage house in 1989 that marketed penny stocks, and with the so called “pump and dump” type of stock sales, defrauded innumerable investors. Belfort and his associates would artificially inflate the price of owned stocks through false and misleading positive statements, in order to sell the cheaply purchased stock at a much higher price. Over the years, he developed such a successful fraud scheme that Stratton Oakmont employed over 1,000 stockbrokers at one point and was estimated to be involved in stock issues worth more than $1 billion. Belfort himself managed to acquire a net worth of $200 million, all at the expense of hundreds of big and small investors he tricked and mislead. His fraudulent ways were discovered by the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority, and in 1999 he was convicted of securities fraud and money laundering and sentenced to four years in jail.
