Early Life, Education, and Career Beginnings
Antonio grew up in London – her father is a native of England, while her mother is of Jamaican descent. Her father was a singer, who often sang classical bass. As she grew up, she developed a strong inclination towards the arts and performing, so after matriculating from high school, she then enrolled at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School.
It is a drama school that provides training for film, television and theatre, and is considered one of the most prestigious drama schools in the world, founded in 1946 by (later Sir) Laurence Olivier. After completing her education there, she joined the National Youth Theatre in 2009 – it’s an organization that focuses on the development of young people through the creative arts, and is the world’s first youth theater. It has developed its prestige thanks to its production of numerous high profile actors, such as Daniel Craig, Colin Firth, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Helen Mirren, and Daniel Day-Lewis. The school holds annual auditions and interviews around the UK.
Rise to Fame
Shortly after completing her education, Thomas pursued her acting career, and was cast in the 2009 television series entitled “Misfits”, a science fiction show focused on a group of young offenders who work at a community service program. During their time there, they obtain supernatural powers after experiencing a strange storm. The series ran from 2009 to 2013, featuring actors such as Iwan Rheon and Lauren Socha, but Antonia left in 2011 to focus on other projects.
In 2012, she appeared in the music video for the song “Charlie Brown” by Coldplay. The following year, she was cast in the film entitled “Sunshine on Leith”, a romantic musical film which is an adaptation of the stage play of the same name, both featuring songs by The Proclaimers. It was premiered at the 2013 Toronto International Film Festivals, and showcased a brief cameo of The Proclaimers.
Netflix and The Good Doctor
Shortly afterwards, she worked in the television series entitled “Scrotal Recall”, which aired on Channel 4. The romantic comedy proved successful, and was later bought by the streaming giant Netflix on which the show found further success. She then worked on a second season, which was exclusively streamed on Netflix under the new name “Lovesick”, a sitcom which stars her alongside Johnny Flynn and Daniel Ings. After her run with the show, she was featured in another music video entitled “C’est La Vie” by the band Stereophonics.
She also narrated the opening and closing lines for the reboot of the British series “Teletubbies”, which is a pre-school children’s television series focused on the four titular multi-colored creatures who have television screens implanted on their abdomens. In 2017, she was cast in another notable role in the television show entitled “The Good Doctor”. It is a medical television series based on the 2013 South Korean series of the same name.
