During his time there, he worked as a press assistant to the governor until 2008, when he was promoted to become campaign manager for his presidential run. He helped him during his bid for presidency but seeing strong competition, he eventually backed out from the race. Sam later became the United States Ambassador at Large for International Religious Freedom in 2018. After Brownback backedg out, Sanders then started working for Mike Huckabee in his bid for the presidency during 2016. However, he also moved aside and instead becoming a strong supporter for Donald Trump.

He was nominated to the position by Trump and was confirmed by the Senate in a 52-46 vote.
