Elvira was raised in New York City, alongside her five brothers Keenen, Damon, Marlon, Dwayne and Shawn, and her four sisters Vonnie, Diedra, Kim and Nadia, by their father Howell Stouten Wayans who was a supermarket manager, and their mother Elvira Alethia (nee Green) who was a singer and social worker.

Unlike some of her siblings who began pursuing a career in the film industry from a very early age, Elvira had a rather normal childhood. She attended a local elementary school, and was mostly interested in playing sports with her peers during her time there. Elvira enrolled at high school in 1986, and it was when she was 16 that she became interested in creative writing, and started contributing to her school’s newspaper.

She matriculated in 1990, and because Elvira hasn’t spoken of her further education, it’s believed that she hasn’t attended college.

It was directed by Tony Scott, also starred Bruce Willis and Chelsea Field, and follows a private detective who’s investigating the murder of his protected witness, together with her boyfriend; the movie was nominated for two awards.
