Wealth Built Through Fighting

How rich was Kimbo Slice? As of early-2018, sources estimate a net worth that is at $500,000, mostly earned through success in his numerous endeavors. His popularity allowed him to take part in numerous interests and he also had roles in various films. All of these achievements ensured the position of his wealth before his passing.

Underground Fighting, UFC, and Beyond

Kimbo was born in Nassau, Bahamas, on 6 February 1974, but at a young age his family moved to Cutler Ridge, Florida, USA. At the age of 13, he was involved in his first fight when he tried to defend a friend. He later attended Miami Palmetto High School where he played for the school’s American Football team as a middle linebacker. After matriculating, he attended Bethune-Cookman University before moving to the University of Miami under an athletic scholarship, and studying criminal justice but didn’t graduate, instead having a tryout with the Miami Dolphins football team, but was unsuccessful.

He then went to work as a bouncer in a strip club, until he was offered a job working as a bodyguard and limousine driver by a high school friend. He also worked for the Miami-based pornography production company Reality Kings, and would maintain close ties with the company for the rest of his life. In 2003, he began his career in mutual combat street fights, unsanctioned but videos of which were posted on the internet. In his first fight, his opponent suffered a large cut over his right eye, which led internet fans to call Kimbo “Slice”, leading to his eventual name of popularity – Kimbo Slice.

In 2005 he started training in martial arts at the Freestyle Fighting Academy under David Avellan, initially for street boxing and focusing on specific techniques, before developing an interest in MMA, which eventually led him to make his MMA debut against Ray Mercer in 2007 at the Cage Fury Fighting Championships 5. He would win via a guillotine choke in the first round, and would then sign with the promotion EliteXC to make his professional MMA debut against Bo Cantrell, who he defeated in 19 seconds.

His next fight would be against Tank Abbott, winning quickly in the first round at EliteXC: Street Certified. He continued fighting for EliteXC, and had some controversial wins during his time there. He was then defeated by Seth Petruzelli who won via TKO in the first 14 seconds of the first round, which was also controversial, and many believe that it was that fight that eventually set EliteXC to bankruptcy in 2008, as Kimbo was paid $500,000. Ultimate Fighting Championship President Dana White then offered Slice to be a part of his company only if he joined “The Ultimate Fighter” television show. There was an agreement leading to the creation of “The Ultimate Fighter: Heavyweights”. He would eventually win the competition, fighting Houston Alexander in 2009, and winning via a back suplex which tipped the scorecards in his favor. In 2010, he had his last fight in the UFC against Matt Mitrione, which he lost.

Kimbo then went on to state his intentions to fight as a professional boxer, and would go on to win seven matches in the next three years. He also tried his hand at professional wrestling, and was set to fight against former sumo wrestler Shinichi Suzukawa, however, he dropped out of the fight after being injured during practice. He also made his official acting debut in a Nickelodeon holiday special entitled “Merry Christmas, Drake & Josh”.

In 2015, Kimbo signed with Bellator MMA, and won against Ken Shamrock. His last fight in Bellator MMA was against Dada 5000 which he won via TKO during the third round. However, the decision was overturned when it was reported that he failed a drug test which found the anabolic steroid nandrolone in his system. He was then set to fight against Scott Coker but the fight was discontinued due to his passing.

The Death of Slice

In June 2016, he was admitted to a hospital near his home in Coral Springs, Florida. It was there that it was discovered that there was a mass on his liver, and he died of heart failure shortly afterwards. Bellator MMA issued a statement after his death, expressing shock at his sudden demise. He left behind six children, and was engaged to a long-time girlfriend at the time of his passing.
