Her paternal grandfather was Chicago Sun-Times columnist Vernon Jarrett. In regards to her education, Laura attended Chicago High School, and after matriculation enrolled at the Harvard Law School from where she graduated with a degree in Law in 2010. During her studies, she was the chief editor of the Harvard Journal of Law and Gender.

Laura started her law career by working as a law clerk for Honorable Rebecca Pallymer, and after some time changed to work as a judicial law clerk for Honorable Ann C. Williams, who officiated the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeal.
