While Owen was born in Pittsburgh, his family would later move to New York City where he would grow up. His father worked as a defense attorney, and during his time in New York gained a lot of exposure in the media. He also spent a bit of time in Santa Fe, New Mexico as a teenager before moving back to Pittsburgh.
After matriculating from high school, Owen enrolled at Emerson College located in Boston to complete a degree in broadcast journalism; the private college offers over three dozen degree programs focused on Arts and Communication, and they also have campuses in Los Angeles and The Netherlands. He mentioned that he chose to pursue a degree focused on broadcasting as he felt that it was a career he would enjoy, and the decision proved right. After completing his degree, he began his career as a reporter for WNCT-TV, which is a CBS station located in Greenville, North Carolina serving the Eastern Inner Banks region.
Move to KPRC 2
He mainly served as a weekend anchor and reporter for WNCT-TV and stayed there for a few years before eventually moving to KPRC 2 also known as the Local 2 News or Click 2 Houston. The station is owned by the Graham Media Group and they are licensed in Houston, Texas, USA. Bell’s Palsy and Controversy
In 2009, reports started surfacing from a publication called “Chron Magazine” suggesting that the anchor was suffering from a mild case of Bell’s palsy. The disease can have symptoms such as muscle weakness, twitching, or the inability to move one or both sides of the face. The cause of the disease is unknown and happens due to a dysfunction of the facial nerve. To treat the disease, he had to take a week off to recover and get a treatment recommended by doctors. After a week, he was given the go ahead to return to his anchoring duties.
Owen also attracted a bit of attention and controversy in 2011 when he was caught on air doing a middle finger salute, which he thought was not caught by the cameras but was captured due to recent upgrades of wider frames for the station; he nonchalantly raised the middle finger to someone off camera and continued on with the broadcast as if nothing happened. He and other executives of the company refused to comment on the situation to prevent it from getting worse, and eventually people just let it slide.
