Who is Rae Sremmurd?
Rae Sremmurd is a hip-hop duo formed by two brothers, Aaquil Iben Shamon Brown and Khalif Malik Ibn Shaman Brown, better known as Slim Jxmmi and Swae Lee. Started in 2009, the two have come a long way to acquire world fame, and produce platinum-certified singles, such as “Swang”, “No Type”, and others.
Rae Sremmurd Background
Slim Jxmmi, the older brother, was born on the 29th December 1991, and Swae Lee on the 6th June 1995 in Inglewood, California; they were raised by a single mother, Bernadette, since their father, Michael, left the family when the two were rather young, in order to support her children, Bernadette worked in the army which led to frequent moves, living briefly in Maryland, Mississippi, until finally settling in Fort Hood, Texas. While there, the two brothers started writing music and learning how to dance, and it was when Swae Lee was 10 years old that the two made their first song, through Fruity Loops. Bernadette met Floyd Sullivan in Texas, and they returned to Mississippi with her new partner. Floyd became their stepfather, and Bernadette left her job in the military, so in order to survive, Floyd sold drugs. Luckily, the boys stayed off the streets, making progress in music and school as well.

Career Beginnings
As early as 2008, the two launched their music career; after meeting Jemiah Middlebrooks in Tupelo, they started a hip-hop band Dem Outta St8 Boyz. Gradually their focus on music increased and after a few recordings and videos, they began uploading their work onto social media. Unfortunately, this led to them leaving the school, which further resulted in a strain in relationships with their mother, who eventually kicked them out of the house.
For a time they dwelled in abandoned buildings, which they used for organizing parties at which they would play their own music.
In 2010, they officially released their debut single entitled “Party Animal”, which soon became a local hit, and with this momentum, they entered the audition for the “Wild Out Wednesday” segment on BET’s show “106 & Park” in Memphis, Tennessee, and succeeded in qualifying. After another few successful performances, they were called up by Def Jam Recordings and Sony Music, but couldn’t reach an agreement.
They changed their name to Rae Sremmurd in 2013, and after a short period of time signed with the newly formed label EarDrummers Entertainment, owned by Mike Will Made It, in partnership with Interscope Records. Their first single under their new name – “No Flex Zone” – achieved platinum status, followed by “No Type”, which eventually achieved triple platinum status, launching them to stardom.
Rise to Fame
The duo continued to work on their music, and their debut full-length album “SremmLife”, came out on the 6th January 2015; the album topped the US Rap and R&B/Hip-Hop charts, and again achieved platinum status in the US. Since then, the brothers have released their second album “SremmLife 2”, which also achieved platinum status, and reached No. 3 and No. 2 on the US R&B/Hip-Hop, and US Rap charts respectively. They are now working on their third album, “SremmLife 3”, scheduled for release later this year. Since achieving world fame, the brothers have collaborated with a number of musicians, including Davido, Baauer, AlunaGeorge, Ty Dolla $ign, Future, and many others.
Furthermore, they have launched their own record label – SremmLife Crew Records – and so far have signed Riff 3x, Bobo Swae, and Impxct.
