Chevy was born in New York City, USA on 8 October 1943 – his zodiac sign is Libra, and he holds American nationality. He’s appeared in more than 100 movies and TV series, while he’s perhaps still known best for his portrayal of the lead character Ty Webb in the 1980 sports comedy movie “Caddyshack”, directed by Harold Ramis, and which also starred Rodney Dangerfield and Bill Murray. It follows a golf club trying to deal with their new members, and the movie was nominated for a Stinker Bad Movie Award for Most Annoying Fake Accent: Female (Sarah Holcomb).

Chevy was raised alongside his older brother Ned in Woodstock, New York State, by their mother Cathalene Parker (nee Browning) who was a concert pianist, and their father Edward Tinsley ‘Ned’ Chase who was a book editor; Edward and Cathalene divorced when Chevy was only four years old, and they both passed away in 2005, Cathalene aged 82 and Edward 86.

Chevy studied at Riverdale County School, but was expelled for unknown reasons; he completed his high school education from Stockbridge School in 1962, and then attended Haverford College, eventually transferring to Bard College, and graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English in 1967; he avoided military draft by claiming that he was gay.

Prior to succeeding in the film industry, Chevy worked numerous jobs, including being a motorcycle messenger, truck driver, audio engineer, construction worker and theatre usher; he was also a drummer and keyboardist in a couple of bands, including the rock ‘n’ roll group Chamaeleon Church.

He gained recognition in 1973, when hired to work as a writer on the comedy radio show “The National Lampoon Radio Hour”, and in October 1975, Chevy joined the critically acclaimed comedy show “Saturday Night Live” (SNL), which he eventually quit in 1997.

Some of the most popular movies in which Chevy appeared at the beginning of his career were the 1976 comedy “Tunnel Vision”, the 1978 romantic thriller comedy “Foul Play”, and the 1980 fantasy comedy “Oh! Heavenly Dog”. He starred in the 1985 neo-noir comedy “Fletch”, which had a budget of $8 million and went on to gross close to $60 million; Chevy was one of the most popular actors in the ‘80s, and reputedly earned an average of $7 million per film.

Several of his ‘90s movies were a failure though, including “Nothing But Trouble”, “Memoirs of an Invisible Man” and “Cops & Robbersons”, all of which were nominated for various Razzie Awards; his mostly successful movie in that decade was perhaps the 1997 comedy “Vegas Vacation”. The following 10 years saw Chevy make a guest appearance in an episode of various critically acclaimed series, such as the mystery crime drama “Law & Order”, the family drama “Brothers & Sisters”, and the action comedy “Chuck”.

Between 2009 and 2014, he starred as Pierce Hawthorne in the hit comedy series “Community”, while a couple of his most recent roles have been in the 2020 comedy movie “The Very Excellent Mr. Dundee”, the 2020 short comedy video “Electri-vacation”, and the 2021 animated family comedy movie “Panda vs. Aliens” (voice role).

Chevy has won 10 awards, including three Primetime Emmys: two for “Saturday Night Live” in 1976, and another in 1978 for “The Paul Simon Special”. He’s been nominated for 10 other awards, and in 1993, Chevy was honored with his own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
