This was the time that he got the idea og flipping houses, despite not knowing anything about the process. He would drive around scouting houses early in the morning, as soon as addresses were listed on an auction site.

He actually started flipping houses with his wife without any capital or startup, before they decided to approach family and friends for support, but that didn’t work as everyone thought the idea at the time was crazy. It was still ups and downs for them until in 2011, when El Moussa and a friend produced a tape of them flipping a house from start to finish, sending the tape to HGTV. A year later, they were offered a weekly time slot to host the show entitled “Flip or Flop”.

Success on Television – Flip or Flop

The couple became a part of a regular weekly program that shows the process of buying a distressed property, renovating it and selling it for a profit. The concept started to become mainstream, after numerous people in the real estate industry showcased its potential. His wife Christina mainly worked on design, while Tarek concentrated on finding properties, buying them through banks, short sales, and foreclosures; they then renovate and sell them. They run their real estate agency from Orange County, California entitled The El Moussa Group.


The couple continued to flip houses along with partner Pete De Best, and found a lot of success due to high foreclosure rates in Orange County. They then expanded their business into Arizona and Nevada – when the show initially launched, the network wasn’t sure it would do well, but it did better than expected, and by the end of the first season, they had over one million viewers, and the show continued to increase its viewership over subsequent seasons.

Marriage and Divorce

According to reports, El Moussa met his wife Christina while the two were working in the real estate industry. Eventually, they would start a romance and would go on to marry in 2009, also becoming partner real estate agents. They had two children and lived in a luxurious home until the market crash in 2008, which really affected their lifestyle. They found success together in the show, however, the couple secretly split in 2016, but It wasn’t until the following year where El Moussa confirmed suspicions by filing for divorce from Christina, finalized in 2018.

Both have since moved on with their lives with Christina being linked with British television personality Ant Anstead. El Moussa on the other hand was said to be dating his children’s nanny, Alyssa Logan for a brief time. Later, he was connected with lingerie model Patience Silva.

Personal Life


Tarek was previously diagnosed with stage 2 thyroid cancer. According to various sources, a registered nurse and avid viewer contacted the network after noticing Tarek’s neck had a lump on it, while he was watching “Flip or Flop” marathon. Tarek already had the lump checked before and it had no problems previously, but after the call he had it checked again. Then it was diagnosed with stage 2 thyroid cancer. The cancer was treated at the early stages, and he thanks Reade in a video at HGTV’s website.
