Born Kwon Ji-yong on the 18th August 1988, in Seoul, South Korea, he is the son of Kwon Young Hwan and his wife, Han Gi-ran. He is the younger child as he has an older sister, named Kwon Dami, who is now the owner of the Rare Market boutique. Interested in music and entertainment on the whole, from an early age, G-Dragon started learning about music when he was only six, by becoming a part of the group Little Roo’Ra, but this didn’t last long. Nevertheless, his career continued, and with private tutoring and high school classes at Seoul Korean Traditional Arts Middle and High School, he improved his skills. After high school, he enrolled at Gyeong Hee University, where he obtained a major in Post Modern Music.
Career Beginnings
His career beginnings trace back to when he only had six years old with the group Little Roo’Ra, with which he released only a Christmas album, after which the contract with the record label was terminated. He eventually decided to turn his interest into other areas of the entertainment world, but after being scouted by the SM Entertainment, he joined the label and trained for the next five years. He became interested in rap music, and tried himself as a rapper, in 2001 sealing a deal with YG Entertainment, shortly after which the group Big Bang was formed.
Big Bang and Rise to Stardom
The original lineup was comprised of six members, G-Dragon, Taeyang, T.O.P, Hyun-seung, Daesung, and Seungri, however, Hyun-seung was left out, and Seungri later left the group. In the first few years, the band performed as a quintet and quickly rose to stardom. Their debut studio album “Bigbang Vol. 1”, came out on the 21st December 2006, and reached No. 3 on the Korean chart, and with the release announced their dominance on the Korean music scene.
The next album, “Remember” was released on the 5th November 2008, and reached No. 5 on the Korean chart, and at the same time made their breakthrough on the Japanese market with the album “Number 1”, which came out in October the same year. Their first No. 1 album was the Japanese album “Big Bang 2”, which topped the charts in Japan and achieved gold status. Their third Korean album, “Made”, which came out in December 2016, became their first Korean album to top the charts, while it also achieved gold status in Japan.
Solo Career
In addition to his highly successful endeavors with the boy band Big Bang, G-Dragon has also had success as a solo artist. So far he’s released three studio albums, “Heartbreaker” in 2009, which reached No. 7 on the Korean chart, then “Coup d’Etat” (2013), which was his first No. 1 album, and “Coup d’Etat + One of a Kind & Heartbreaker”, which also came out in 2013.
Business Ventures
Outside of music, G-Dragon has launched a few successful business ventures, including café ownership, opening Monsant Café in 2015 and Untitled in 2017.
