Early Life, Parents, and Education

The daughter of Mona and Gary Steele, an Army family living in the Panama Canal Zone, she is of African-American, Irish and Italian ancestry. She has two brothers, Courtney and Chad, and alongside her parents moved around the world, including to Greece, Belgium, and other countries, but returned to Colorado Springs in the US when she was in seventh grade. She went to Thomas B. Doherty High School in Colorado Springs, but after two years, she and her family moved to Carmel, Indiana, where she attended Carmel High School, matriculating in 1990.

Sage then enrolled at Indiana University, Bloomington and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in sports communication. 20 years after her graduation, Sage gave the commencement speech at the 2015 Indiana University undergraduate commencement, regarding this achievement as the greatest honor of her career.

Career Beginnings

Sage started her career in South Bend, Indiana at WSBT-TV as a sports reporter and news producer. She held the position for two years until 1997, when she joined WISH-TV, a CBS affiliate in Indianapolis, Indiana. She was the weekend morning sports anchor and weekday reporter for a year, reporting on the results of the Indianapolis Colts, Indiana Pacers, Brickyard 400 auto races, and Indianapolis 500, while also reporting on local college and high school sports teams.

After her stint at WISH-TV expired, she moved to Tampa, Florida, as a sports reporter at the ABC affiliate WFTS. For the next three years, she collaborated with Jay Crawford and Scott Hanson, and also worked some time at Fox Sports Florida as a reporter, covering Central Florida teams such as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Tamp Bay Lightning, and Orlando Magic.

Rise to Prominence

Sage work eventually took her elsewhere in the US; she joined Comcast SportsNet Mid-Atlantic in Bethesda, Maryland, working as an anchor and reporter on the station’s show “SportsNite”, covering the sporting teams of the Washington, DC/Baltimore region. She remained on the network until 2007, when her hard work was recognized by one of the most prominent networks in the US, ESPN.

She made her screen debut on ESPN in 2007, as a part of the 6:00 p.m. ET edition of SportsCenter. Since then, Sage has become one of the most recognized personalities of ESPN, contributing to various shows on the network, including serving as a host of “NBA Countdown” from 2013 until 2017, and of “SportsCenter” on Saturday and Sunday, starting in 2017. Most recently, she was the co-host of the Miss America 2017 pageant, next to Chris Harrison.
