Acting Career
One of Towne’s first acting roles was in the film “Almost Famous”, actually as a fill-in, written by her uncle Robert Towne and directed by Cameron Crowe. The film starred Billy Crudup, Frances McDormand, and Kate Hudson following the story of a teenage journalist covering a fictitious rock band in hopes of getting his first cover story published on Rolling Stone. The story is based on the experiences of the director himself while touring with various rock bands. The film bombed at the box office, but received critical acclaim, earning numerous award nominations.
Her next project was the crime film “Havoc” in which she had a minor role, released in 2005 and starring Anne Hathaway and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, following the lives of wealthy teenagers in Los Angeles who try to imitate a gangster lifestyle. Two years later, she had a minor role in the television show “Gilmore Girls”, which focuses on a mother and daughter relationship as they live in a small town filled with various characters. The show explored topics such as romance, education, friendship, and many more. Afterwards, she decided to take a break from acting for several years.
Directing and Return to Acting
In 2011, Jocelyn returned to acting in the film “A Bird of the Air”, in which she played the character Sue Weber, but then forayed into directing work, creating their own film “I Am I” working alongside Simon Helberg. The following year, she worked on another project as a director, entitled “We’ll Never Have Paris”; released in 2014, the romantic comedy stars Helberg alongside Melanie Lynskey, and is based on Jocelyn’s real life engagement to Helberg, but received mixed reviews.
