Education and early life

Joe and his sister were raised in Colorado by their parents, but about whom no details have been disclosed, partly because Joe respects their privacy; it’s believed that his mother was a chef and his father a pianist, but this hasn’t been confirmed.

Joe became interested in music at a very early age, and was eight when he began taking piano lessons; he eventually switched to guitar, believing it was ‘cooler’ that piano. He was also passionate about cars while growing up, and worked as an auto damage appraiser while simultaneously attending his senior year at Faith Christian Academy.

Joe matriculated in 1998, and then began pursuing a career in music rather than enrolling at college.

The Fray

Joe met Isaac Slade while they were both attending Faith Christian Academy; they reunited in 2002, and began writing songs and performing together. The duo then welcomed guitarist Mike Ayars and drummer Zach Johnson; Isaac’s brother Caleb joined as the bassist, but was soon asked to leave.

After Zach left the band and enrolled at university, he was replaced by new drummer Ben Wysocki; it was not long after this that Dave Welsh joined as the lead guitarist, and the boys formed the band The Fray. Their debut extended play (EP) “Movement EP” was released in 2002, and was followed by their second “Reason EP” in 2003; in 2004, the magazine “Westword” voted them Best New Band.

Their debut album “How to Save a Life” was released on 13 September 2005, and its eponymous lead single was featured in an episode of both the medical series “Grey’s Anatomy” and the sitcom “Scrubs”; it was this song that helped the band become popular in the USA, peaking at #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and topping the Adult Top 40 chart, while it also charted in Sweden, Italy and Australia.

Their second album “The Fray” was released on 3 February 2009 and its lead single “You Found Me” topped the Adult Top 40 chart, as well as peaked at #7 on the Hot 100 chart; mostly thanks to the single, the album topped the Billboard 200 chart. The second single “Never Say Never” and the third single “Syndicate” were also quite successful, both charting on Adult Top 40 and Pop Songs.

They released “Christmas EP” on 22 December 2009, comprising five acoustic covers of Christmas carols.

The Fray’s third studio album “Scars & Stories” was released on 7 February 2012 but wasn’t nearly as successful as its predecessors; its two lead singles “Heartbeat” and “Run for Your Life” also failed to attract a lot of attention.

Their fourth and latest album “Helios” came out on 25 February 2014 and peaked at #2 on the Billboard US Top Rock Albums, and its two lead singles “Hurricane” and “Break Your Plans” received mixed reviews.

The Fray’s greatest hits album “Through the Years: The Best of the Fray” came out on 4 November 2016., then it was revealed in July 2019 that the band would be taking a break from releasing new music; Isaac left the band on 14 May 2022.

He met Candice Accola at a 2012 Super Bowl event and they became engaged in May 2013; Joe and Candice exchanged vows in a private ceremony on 18 October 2014.
