After completing his education, Baumgartner moved to Los Angeles to start his acting career, but then went to Minneapolis, Minnesota to serve as the artistic director for Hidden Theatre. During his time there, he received multiple awards for his acting and artistic efforts. He continued working in theatrical projects, performing at the Guthrie Theatre, Theatre de la Jeune Lune, and the Berkeley Repertory Theatre.
