Born Kawhi Anthony Leonard on the 29th June 1991, in Los Angeles, California USA, the only son and the youngest child of Kim Robertson and Mark Leonard, with four older sisters – their father was shot and killed on the 18th January 2008, at the car wash in Compton that he ran. Kawhi went to Canyon Springs High School in Moreno Valley, California, but for his junior year, he transferred to Martin Luther King High School. During his senior year, Kawhi was one of the leaders of the King High Wolves basketball team, as he averaged 22.6 points, 13.1 rebounds, 3.9 assists, and 3.0 blocks per game.
After matriculation, Kawhi enrolled at San Diego University, which he attended from 2009 to 2011, continuing his basketball career, and posting decent numbers, including 15.7 points and 10.4 rebounds average during his sophomore season. He was named First-team All-MWC in 2010 and 2011, while in 2011 he earned Consensus second-team All-American selection.
Career Beginnings and Rise to Prominence
Kawhi’s career started in 2011 when he was drafted into the NBA by the Indiana Pacers, as the 15th overall pick, however, he was sent to the San Antonio Spurs with the rights to Erazem Lorbek and Davis Bertans, while the Pacers received George Hill.
In his rookie season, he played in 64 games, 39 of which were starts, and averaged 7.9 points with 5.1 rebounds per game. Nothing indicated that he would become the star player he is today, but he improved the next year, and had almost 12 points per game on average. In 2013-2014 the Spurs won the NBA Championship, and he was one of the stars on the team with 16.5 points, 6.2 rebounds, and 1.7 steals per game. He continued to improve, and had his best season with the Spurs in 2016-2017, when he averaged 25.5 points per game.
The next year was rather turbulent for Kawhi, as he started a feud with Spurs officials, teammates and Greg Popovich himself, and as a result he was traded to the Toronto Raptors for DeMar DeRozan and Jakob Poltl, and also a protected 2019 first-round draft pick.
A career with the Raptors, Recent Move
He remained with the Raptors for only one year, but during his time there became a legend, as he helped the Raptors win their first NBA championship, and had his best season in the NBA, averaging 26.6 points per game, with 7.3 rebounds.
In the playoffs, he became the real team leader with 30.5 points per game and 9.1 rebounds, and was instrumental in defeating the Philadelphia 76ers in the series, as he scored the winning point with the last shot in the game.Despite this success with the Raptors, he decided not to stay in Toronto, and has recently signed a contract with the Los Angeles Clippers.
