Who is Neetu Singh?

Indian actress Neetu Kapoor was born as Harneet Kaur in New Delhi, India, on 8 July 1958, making Cancer her zodiac sign. She has 73 acting credits, but is perhaps known best for portraying one of the lead characters, Kusum Duggal in the 2010 crime comedy movie “Do Dooni Chaar”, which also starred Aditi Vasudev and Rishi Kapoor, and was written and directed by Habib Faisal. It follows an Indian middle-class family who want to buy a new car, and the film won seven of its 14 award nominations.

Education and early life

Neetu was raised in New Delhi by her Punjabi Sikh parents Raje Kaur Singh and Darshan Singh; she’s believed to be an only child, as she hasn’t spoken about having siblings.

Neetu’s father died when she was six, and she launched her acting career two years later, portraying Young Geeta in the romantic musical action movie “Suraj”; some of Neetu’s following roles were in the 1966 musical comedy “Dus Lakh”, the 1968 family musical “Do Kaliyaan” and the 1968 comedy “Do Dooni Char”.

Neetu studied at a local high school in New Delhi and upon matriculating in 1976, focused on acting rather than to pursue a college degree.

Roles in movies

The remainder of the ‘60s saw Neetu appear in three movies: the 1969 comedy “Waris”, the 1970 family drama “Ghar Ghar Ki Kahani” and the 1970 drama “Pavitra Papi”.

She portrayed Dancer in the 1973 musical action “Procession of Memories”, which starred Dharmendra and Zeenat Aman, and was directed by Nasir Hussain. It follows three brothers whose parents have been murdered, while they want to avenge them now that they’re older; the film was nominated for two awards. Some of Neetu’s notable performances in the remainder of the decade were in the 1974 drama “Shatranj Ke Mohre”, the 1976 war action “Sawa Lakh Se Ek Ladaun” and the 1979 action thriller “Duniya Meri Jeb Mein”.

She starred as Komal in the 1981 action comedy “Yaarana”, which also starred Amitabh Bachchan and Tanuja Samarth, and was directed by Rakesh Kumar. It follows Bishan who’s lost his fortune while helping his friend Kishan with his career, and the film won one of its two award nominations. Neetu was then cast to appear in the 1981 action “Khoon Ka Rishta”, the 1982 comedy “Chorni”, and the 1983 drama “Ganga Meri Maa”.

She retired from acting following her role in “Ganga Meri Maa”, having married and wanting to focus on her family. Neetu returned to the film industry in 2009, when cast to play Older Harleen Kaur in the popular romantic comedy “Love Aaj Kal”, which starred Saif Ali Khan and Deepika Padukone, and was written and directed by Imtiaz Ali. It follows an old-fashioned romantic as he’s telling a younger man his personal love story – the movie won 18 of its 61 award nominations.

Neetu was then cast to appear in the 2012 romantic drama “Jab Tak Hai Jaan”, and in 2013 the romantic comedy “Saadi Love Story” and the romantic action comedy “Besharam”. Following her appearance in the 2013 family drama “Gaursons Group”, Neetu retired from acting once again, butd returned in 2022 when cast to play Geeta Saini in the critically acclaimed family comedy “Jug Jugg Jeeyo”, which starred Anil Kapoor and Varun Dhawan, and was directed by Raj Mehta. It follows the lives of two couples who’ve just married, and the movie won 10 of its 26 award nominations.

Neetu’s most recent role has been in the 2022 music video “Jaise Savan”, which starred Varun Dhawan and Kiara Advani, and was directed by Taani Tanvir.

Neetu has no TV series roles, as she prefers to appear in movies.

Other credits

Neetu’s worked as a costume designer on five movies, including the 1990 family drama “Amiri Garibi”, the 1993 romantic comedy “Shreemaan Aashique”, and the 1996 romantic action “Daraar”.

She received special thanks for the 2009 romantic comedy movie “Love Aaj Kal”.

Some of Neetu’s recent talk-show appearances have been in “Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa”, “Dance Deewane Juniors” and “The Romantics”.

Love life and marriage

Neetu met the late Indian actor Rishi Raj Kapoor while shooting for the movie “Kabhie Kabhie”, and they exchanged vows in a traditional Indian ceremony on 22 January 1980.

Neetu gave birth to their daughter Riddhiima Kapoor Sahni on 15 September 1980; she’s today a fashion designer, and is married to industrialist Bharat Sahni, with whom she has a daughter Samara Sahni, born on 23 March 2011.

Neetu gave birth to her and Rishi’s son Ranbir Kapoor on 28 September 1982; he’s an actor and is married to Indian actress Alia Bhatt, with whom he has a daughter Raha Kapoor, born on 6 November 2022.

Neetu and Rishi’s marriage ended on 30 April 2020, when he died after a long battle with leukemia; he was 67.

Interesting facts and hobbies

Neetu tested positive to the coronavirus in December 2020, and spent some time in isolation.

She changed her name to Neetu Singh from Harneet Kaur because she was advised so by her agent.

In most of the movies that she’s appeared in, Neetu portrayed a ‘lively girlfriend’ or a ‘fun-loving daughter’.

Her real-life mother Rajee portrayed her mother in the movie “Rani Aur Lalpari”.

Neetu took dance lessons at Indian actress Vyjantimala’s dance school when she was a teenager.
