Born Rachel Alice Marie Skarsten on the 23rd April 1985, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, she is the daughter of Dr. Stan Skarsten and his wife Mary Aileen Self. She spent her childhood in her hometown with her younger brother, Jonathan. She attended the Royal Academy of Dance for 12 years, and concurrently Claude Watson School for the Arts for grades between four and eight, majoring in visual arts and the cello. She continued her education at Claude Watson School for the Arts, at Earl Haigh Secondary
School attending for grades nine to 12, and eventually received another major in visual arts. She would later obtain a double degree in English Literature and Classical Studies at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario.
Career Beginnings
Rachel’s career started when she was only 13 years old, with minor role in the TV series “The Famous Jett Jackson” (1998), and the same year she was chosen for the role of Elizabeth Lawrence in the TV drama series “Little Men” (1998-1999). She continued with a couple of minor roles, including as Young Julie Adams in the TV series “Twice in a Lifetime” (2000), among others.
Rise to Prominence
Rachel was becoming more popular, and in 2002 she secured one of the most prominent roles of her career, including the part of Dinah Lance in the short-lived TV action-adventure drama series “Birds of Prey” (2002-2003). She featured in all 14 episodes, which made her even more popular. After this, she starred in the horror film “Fear of the Dark” (2003), and in 2007 in the action-horror film “Jack Brooks: Monster Slayer”.
Career Decline and Most Recent Endeavors
She became focused on her education, and returned to Canada to finish her graduate studies, so her career suffered for a while. She returned to acting with roles in such TV series as “Flashpoint” (2011), “The Listener” (2011-2012) and “The L.A. Complex” (2012), among other projects.
In 2013 she was selected for the role of Tamsin in the TV fantasy drama series “Lost Girl” (2013-2015), and in 2015 portrayed Andrea in the film “Fifty Shades of Grey”, based on the popular book of the same name by E.L James. She continued successfully, as the same year she was selected for the role of Elizabeth Tudor in the TV series “Reign” (2015-2017), and then played Leah in the biopic thriller film “Molly’s Game” (2017), about the professional ice skater and poker player Molly Bloom, while in 2018 she was Claire in the drama film “Acquainted”. She is now working on several projects, including the new series “Batwoman”, in which she will assume the character of Alice, the series lead antagonist.
