Stan Cadwallader Personal Life, Relationship with Jim Nabors

Stan lived in his hometown where he met Jim, who would often spend vacations in Hawaii, and it was in 1975 that the two met for the first time. Jim subsequently moved to Honolulu, and once the two started their relationship, Jim’s next move was buying a macadamia plantation on Maui, and they began making public appearances together, one of the first of which was in 1978 when Jim brought Stan to the start of the Indy 500 motor race, where Jim performed “Back Home Again in Indiana”. The two never bothered about comments on their relationship and just a month after same-sex marriage became legal in Washington, the two held a wedding ceremony on the 15th January 2013 at the Fairmont Olympic Hotel in Seattle, Washington State. Jim passed away four years later – the two didn’t have children together as they decided not to adopt.

Jim Nabors Short Bio

Let’s now switch focus to Jim, as we have shared all that we know about Stan. Born James Thurston Nabors on the 12th June 1930, in Sylacauga, Alabama USA, he was the youngest child of three, born to Fred Nabors, a police officer, and Mavis Pear who was a housewife. He spent his childhood in his hometown and after high school matriculation enrolled at the University of Alabama. He discovered acting and his talent for comedy at university, and began appearing in comedy sketches. After graduation, Jim left Alabama and settled in New York, where he started pursuing his career, although it was years before he made a breakthrough. He had to move to Los Angeles, and it was there that he started performing regularly at The Horn tavern. During his performances, Jim would do a cabaret act, and that was how Andy Griffith found him.

Gomer Pyle Character, Popularity, Awards, and Death

Andy introduced Jim to the world through his own show, as he cast him in the role of Gomer Pyle; although it was one episode, Gomer became so popular that he received his own show. The series “Gomer Pyle: USMC” was aired from 1964 until 1969, and became extremely successful such that Jim was launched to stardom. In the show, Gomer joined the US Marine Corps, and was so successful in depicting the Marines that he was later named an honorary Sergeant, presented by Commandant of the Marine Corps Gen. James F. Amos.

Furthermore, upon Jim’s death, the Corps released a statement: “Semper Fi, Gomer Pyle. Rest in peace Jim Nabors, one of the few to ever be named an Honorary Marine”. During his career, Jim received several nominations, and won a number of awards, including the Golden Globe Award- nomination, and also received his Star on the Walk of Fame in Hollywood.

Jim passed away on the 30th November 2017, at his home in Honolulu, Hawaii.

1It's pretty obvious that we had no rights as a couple, yet when you've been together 38 years, I think something's got to happen there, you've got to solidify something. And, at my age, it's probably the best thing to do. -- JN, on his same-sex marriage to life partner Stan Cadwallader in 2013
2I never knifed anybody in the back. It was just not my nature at all and that is why I was so surprised that I made it in show business at all.
3I think this story sums up my career the best. One time I was walking in an airport somewhere and I saw this woman with her young son. The son looked up at me and it was obvious that he recognized me. He thought for a second and he said 'Mom, there goes an old Gomer!'

3Long-standing Hollywood gossip had Jim secretively marrying actor Rock Hudson back in the 1970s. While the two were never more than friends at this time, because of the fear that one or both of them might be "outed" and their careers destroyed, Nabors and Hudson never saw or spoke to each other again in order to help squelch the rumor.
4At age 82, he married 64-year-old Stan Cadwallader, a former firefighter and life partner of some 38 years, in a small ceremony on January 15 2013, at the Fairmont Olympic Hotel in downtown Seattle, where the couple traveled after same sex marriage became legal in Washington State the month before.

His final performance was May 25th, 2014. However his first appearance in 1972 was a confusing one. He thought he was invited to sing the National Anthem. But a scant few minutes before he was to perform he found out he was to sing "Back Home Again in Indiana"! In this short period of time, to his credit, (Surprise-Surprise-Surprise) he learned the melody and words and performed it flawlessly. Also as a special gesture to Jim's final performance at Indy, the starting command "Lady and Gentlemen Start Your Engines" was given together by both Mari Hulman George and Nabors, the first time a non-member of the Hulman-George family had given the command for the 500 since 1954.
16Considered by Carol Burnett to be her "good luck charm" and as such was a guest star on each season's premiere of The Carol Burnett Show (1967).
