Melissa’s grandfather emigrated from China to Buffalo, New York along with his wife and children. Her father grew up in American and would move to Great Neck, New York after completing his college education. Melissa grew up idolizing the New York news anchor Kaity Tong, and being one of the few Chinese-American broadcast journalists of the time, she inspired Lee to pursue a career as a reporter. She started her working life with her hometown newspaper called the Great Neck Record as a reporter, however, she attended Harvard College and would graduate with a degree in Government in 1995, and during which she was the Assistant Managing Editor for the publication called the Harvard Crimson.

After completing her studies, she would start working as a consultant for Mercer Management Consulting, focusing on banking and credit card affairs before later finding work in the news and financial sector, with both CNN Financial News and Bloomberg Television. She eventually decided to leave when she found a position with CNBC in 2004.

Lee would eventually take over as the host of the daily show CNBC program “Fast Money” in 2009, when former co-host Dylan Ratigan left CNBC to join companion network MSNBC. The show tackles financial stock trading, and begins one hour after the close of trading on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE). She also became the temporary host of “Closing Bell” when the anchor is unavailable, which is named after the bell that is rung to signify the end of the trading session on the NYSE. The show also has a European version which tackles the European markets after the closing bell as well. Aside from these, she hosted “Options Action” and “Money in Motion: Currency Trading”, and thanks to her work, she would be nominated for two Emmy Award for Business News, and won a Gracie Award for Outstanding Host-News.

Aside from her financial show work, Melissa has also worked on a total of five CNBC documentaries, including “Code Wars: America’s Cyber Threat”, “The $50M Con”, “Porn: Business of Pleasure”, “Made in China: The People’s Republic of Profit”, and “Coca-Cola: The Real Story Behind the Real Thing”. In 2015, she was assigned as one of the four hosts of the show “Power Lunch”, which examines trends, people and businesses which influence Wall Street, and has real-time market coverage starting from the mid-point of the US trading day.
