After she was named a finalist in the Westinghouse Science Talent Search in 1997, she wanted to pursue a career in science, so she graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering. Right after graduation, Lea entered the active-duty Navy, attending the US Navy Flight School at Naval Air Station Pensacola in Florida. After studying there for two years, she earned a diploma for Naval Aviator Wings. Moreover, she was also qualified with an instrument rating, and as a commercial pilot.

Career in the U.S. Navy

Lea’s career in the U.S. Navy eventually began when she became a fighter pilot of the single-seat F/A-18 “Hornet”, serving in that capacity for 12 years, interspersed with other duties such as a landing signal officer (LSO) and a squadron public affairs officer. She served in Iraq and Afghanistan too, where her responsibilities included providing air support for ground troops,  being an intelligence operations officer in Operation Enduring Freedom, and a defense foreign liaison officer.

Career Beginnings in Journalism

Nevertheless, Lea was always interested in journalism as much as in science, and serving her country, so after leaving the Navy she went to New York to pursue a career as a journalist, enrolled in the New York Film Academy to study journalism. Almost immediately after obtaining her digital journalism certificate in 2009, she started working for NBC News. People who worked there at the time recognized her talent and dedication, so they gave her the opportunity in 2010 to write, produce and edit “The Today Show”, NBC’s nightly news program. She was also responsible for writing news, editing articles and producing photos for NBC’s website. Her job as a digital journalist was to cover all stories for news programs for every affiliate of NBC’s in the whole country. While working there, she had a unique opportunity to conduct interviews and reports on some of the most important people all over the world, including now ex-President Barack Obama, the first female governor of Afghanistan, and Republican Presidential Nominees.

Rise to Fame

In September of 2011, Lea moved to San Diego, California, to work for KNSD-TV (NBC 7) as a military reporter, adding a considerable amount to her net worth and popularity emanating from her reports about the missing Malaysian Airlines flight. She was a journalist in San Diego for approximately two years, and during this time, she began using her married name – Lea Sutton.
