Michael Harrison Sweet was born on 4 July 1963, in Whittier, California USA, and is a singer, guitarist and writer, best known for being the co-founder, lead singer and lead guitarist of the Christian metal band called Stryper, before which he was also the guitarist and singer of the band Boston from 2007 to 2011.

The First Run of Stryper

In the early 1980s, Michael and his brother started the band entitled Roxx Regime, which played at local venues. He was the only guitar player of the band originally, which would then change its name to Stryper, as the members wanted to change the stereotype of heavy metal being satanic, and to bring Christian rock to the mainstream. He would become the lead vocalist and lead guitarist for the band while also writing music for them, and then also co-produced and arranged a lot of their music. They had released five successful studio albums before their popularity started to decline in the 1990s.

Solo Work

After nine years with Stryper, Sweet decided to leave the band in 1992 to try and pursue a solo career. He released a demo album entitled “Unstryped” which consisted of songs he wanted to originally be for the band. His first self-titled album proved successful and sold over 250,000 copies before he releasing another album in 1996 entitled “Real” which earned him a Dove Award nomination.

He then went on hiatus from music, and moved to Massachusetts where he worked with his father-in-law’s cranberry and campground business called Maple Park. It wasn’t until 1998 that he decided to release another album, which was this time created independently, and entitled “Truth” it received a lot of critical acclaim. This led him to sign with Restless Records, and to re-release the album in 2000. Seven years later, he was asked by Boston’s Tom Scholz if he wanted to be one of the lead singers and guitarists for a tribute event to the life of Brad Delp, which led him to join Boston during their 2008 summer tour.

Reunited with Stryper

Michael started performing with Stryper once more before performing with Boston, and the group decided to hold concerts once more. They worked to create a new album entitled “Reborn”, and this time he continued working with the band, while also maintaining his solo career, releasing the solo album “Him” which contained traditional hymns, before working on the album “Murder by Pride” which was released in 2009.

He then released an album entitled “Touched”, which was in honor of her wife before she passed away from ovarian cancer two years later. He would go on to perform in a world tour before creating a new record entitled “The Covering”. In 2013, Stryper would produce two new albums, entitled “Second Coming” and “No More Hell to Pay”, and the group also recorded music with other band members. Three years later, Michael came out with another solo album entitled “One Sided War”, while Stryper was also working on a new album entitled “Fallen”. He’s also working with George Lynch who is the Lynch Mob founder.

Working with Boston and Personal Life

While a part of Boston, Sweet performed guitar work, background vocals and lead vocals, and would become a permanent member of the band after he impressed band members with his tribute to Brad Delp. He would stay with Boston until 2011, when he announced that he was leaving the band to focus more on his contributions to Stryper.

According to reports, Sweet met his wife Kyle while he was working on his first video with Stryper. They were married for 22 years and had two children together, however, in 2009, his wife passed away from cancer.
