Kelly is the daughter of Irish immigrants Kristen and Josh O’Donnell, and grew up in Westlake with her older sister Jenny, who is now also a successful journalist. After she finished high school, Kelly enrolled at the Northwestern University, studying for a Bachelor of Science in Education degree, which combined a course in journalism and public policy. She graduated in 1987, and years later received the Alumnae of Northwestern University’s Alumnae Award.

Career Beginnings

Kelly started her career at WJW-TV, finding a spot as an associate producer and reporter and serving in the position for several years, before her hard work was noticed and she received an offer from the NBC News. She joined the NBC in 1994, and since then has held a number of positions within the station, becoming a senior journalist and increasing her wealth to a large degree. Her first major task as an NBC News employee was to travel with Senator Bob Dole during his run for the White House in 1996. After that, she was attached to the Third Infantry Division during operations in Fallujah, and Kelly was also stationed in Baghdad and Qatar. Kelly was on the spot after the September 11, 2001 attacks, and covered the space shuttle Columbia disaster, in which all crew members died in a terrifying disintegration of the shuttle. Furthermore, Kelly reported on the travels and later death of Pope John Paull II.
