Who is Toby Regbo?

British actor Toby Finn Regbo was born under the zodiac sign Libra on 18 October 1991, in Hammersmith, London, England. He has 24 acting credits, and is perhaps still known best for playing Nemo Aged 15 in his debut film appearance in the 2009 romantic fantasy movie “Mr. Nobody”, which starred Sarah Polley and Jared Leto, and was written and directed by Jaco Van Dormael. It follows a boy who has infinite life possibilities and is living some of them; the movie won 12 of its 18 award nominations.

He’s currently shooting for the two upcoming series’ “Belgravia: The Next Chapter” and “Platform 7”.

Education and early life

Toby was raised in Hammersmith alongside his brother Louis, by their British mother of Italian descent Chiara Ghiggini, and Norwegian father; not many other details have been disclosed about Toby’s family, as he respects their privacy, but it’s also known that his maternal grandmother was an Australian ballerina, and that his maternal grandfather was Italian and was the captain of a cruise ship.

Toby became interested in acting while attending a local elementary school in London, having appeared in a number of plays performed at the school; he was 14 when he made his debut TV series appearance, playing Ensign in two episodes of the 2006 action adventure “Sharpe”, which stared Daragh O’Malley and Sean Bean, and follows a fictional British soldier fighting in the Napoleonic Wars.

Toby matriculated from Latymer Upper School in 2000, and then honed his acting skills at Young Blood Theatre Company.

Roles in TV series

The year 2007 saw Toby play Chad Turner in the episode “Super Blane” of the action crime comedy “M. I. High”, and in 2012, he portrayed Jim Hawkins in both episodes of the historical action adventure mini-series “Treasure Island”, which starred Elijah Wood and Barnaby Kay, and follows Jim Hawkins as he’s trying to find pirate Captain Flint’s treasure; the mini-series was nominated for four awards. Also in 2012, Toby portrayed Harry in all three episodes of the mystery mini-series “The Town”.

From 2013 through 2017, he played Francis de Valois in 51 episodes of the critically acclaimed drama “Reign”, which also starred Megan Follows and Adelaide Kane, and was created by Stephanie Sengupta and Laurie McCarthy based on the books by Lily Blake. It follows the life of Mary, Queen of Scots, and the series won four of its 25 award nominations. Toby had to leave “Reign” because the producers wanted to stay true to the books which the series was based on, as Toby’s character died from the injuries he sustained at the Battle of Tettenhall.

In 2019, he played Tommaso Peruzzi in seven episodes of the 2019 biographical historical drama “Medici”, which starred Alessandra Mastronardi and Daniel Sharman, and was created by Frank Spotnitz and Nicholas Meyer. Set in 15th century Italy, the series follows Cosimo de Medici who’s become the head of his banking family; the series aired from 2016 through 2019, and won three of its four award nominations.

Toby’s since appeared in three series: he played Aethelred in 21 episodes of the historical action “The Last Kingdom” from 2017 through 2020, Jack Blackfriars in six episodes of the 2022 romantic fantasy “A Discovery of Witches”, and Christian in three episodes of the 2022 comedy “Chivalry”.

Roles in movies

Toby portrayed Michael in the popular 2009 historical mystery “Glorious 39”, which starred Eddie Redmayne and Romola Garai, and was written and directed by Stephen Poliakoff; it follows the life of an adopted daughter of a British politician right before World War II.

Some of Toby’s following roles were in the 2010 adventure family fantasy “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1”, the 2011 fantasy “Kiss & Cry”, and the 2011 romantic drama “One Day”. In 2013, Toby played John in the thriller “U Want Me 2 Kill Him?”, which starred Anthony Warren and Jamie Blackley, and was directed by Andrew Douglas. In 2018, Toby portrayed Young Dumbledore in the hit adventure family fantasy “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald”, which starred Katherine Waterston and Eddie Redmayne, and which David Yates directed. It follows magizoologist Newt Scamander and his continued adventures; the film won three of the 26 awards for which it was nominated.

Toby’s since appeared in only a single movie: the 2022 biographical comedy “Pinball: The Man Who Saved the Game”.

Toby auditioned for the role of JJ Jones in the critically acclaimed drama series “Skins”, which aired from 2007 through 2013 and was a hit, winning seven of its 41 award nominations; the role eventually went to Ollie Barbieri.

He was cast to play Young King Stefan in the popular 2014 adventure family movie “Maleficent”, but the producers re-cast him only a week into the shooting as they believed him to be too old for the part.
