Early Life and Education

Speaking about her early life, Nancy Travis spent parts of her childhood in Baltimore, Maryland and Boston, Massachusetts, before she returned to New York City. Nancy was raised in a Catholic family along with her brother Gordon, Jr. by her father, Gordon Travis, who worked as a sales executive, and her mother, Theresa, who was a social worker. Regarding her education, she attended Framingham North High School, and upon matriculation in 1979, having become interested in acting, Nancy enrolled into New York University and graduated with a BA degree in Drama in 1983.

Career Beginnings and Theatre

While in college, Nancy began pursuing her career as an actress, performing in the play “It’s Hard To Be A Jew” at The American Jewish Theatre in NYC, which was followed by her appearance in the stage version of “Brighton Beach Memoirs” by Neil Simon. Afterwards, she became one of the founding members of the Off-Broadway theater company called Naked Angels, performing in their productions of such plays as “Aven-U Boys” and “King Of Connecticut”. Subsequently, her Broadway debut came with her appearance in Herb Gardner’s play “I’m Not Rappaport”. All of these performances gradually increased her popularity.

Professional Acting Career and Breakthrough

Right after her graduation, Nancy’s career was moved to the next level, as she made her debut TV film appearance in the title “Malice In Wonderland” (1985), which was followed by her portrayal of Jessica Grey in the ABC television miniseries entitled “Harem” in 1986, starring alongside Omar Sharif. Her breakthrough role came in the following year, when she was chosen to portray Sylvia Bennington in the film “3 Men And A Baby”, the role which she reprised in its sequel “3 Men And A Little Lady” in 1990, increasing enormously her popularity in the field of acting. Side by side, Nancy guest-starred in such TV series as “Spenser: For Hire”, “Worlds Beyond” and “Tales From The Darkside”, and by the end of the decade she also was cast as Karen Lutnick in the 1988 film “Married To The Mob”, played Kathleen Avilla in the film “Internal Affairs” (1990), starring alongside Andy Garcia and Richard Gere, and featured as Corinne Landreaux in the film “Air America” next to Mel Gibson and Robert Downey, Jr. in the same year.

The 1990s

With the beginning of the next decade, she continued to line up successes, by starring in the role of Cassie Slocombe in the film “Passed Away” and as Joan Barry in Richard Attenborough’s film “Chaplin”, both in 1992. In the following year, Nancy was cast as Rita Baker in the film “The Vanishing” as well as Harriet Michaels in the film entitled “So I Married An Axe Murderer”. Afterwards, she was chosen to do the voice over of Bernice in the USA Network animated sitcom “Duckman: Private Dick/Family Man” (1994-1997) and to portray Kim Cooper in the CBS sitcom entitled “Almost Perfect” (1995-1997). When the filming of it was ended in 2004, she started working on the 2005 TV film “Talk Show Diaries”, and another film entitled “The Sisterhood Of The Traveling Pants” (2005), in which she appeared as Lydia Rodman.

Two years later, Nancy was cast as April Brenner in the TV film “The Party Never Stops: Diary Of A Binge Drinker”, and as Cat in the film “The Jane Austen Book Club”. Her next major role came during the same year, when she started appearing as Susan Pearson in the CBS sitcom “The Bill Engvall Show”, aired until 2009, then in the following year she starred in two TV films – “Pregnancy Pact” as Lorraine Dougan and “A Walk In My Shoes” as Trish Fahey.
