Skylar Diggins-Smith, born on the 2nd of August 1990, and is an American professional basketball player who has become known as one of the premiere members of the Women’s National Basketball Association team, the Dallas Wings. She was previously a member of Notre Dame’s basketball team when she played college ball, and was drafted into the WNBA third overall by the Tulsa Shock.

Skylay Diggins-Smith’s Early Life

Born in South Bend, Indiana, Diggins-Smith is the daughter of Renee Scott and Tige Diggins. She grew up with three younger brothers namely Tige, Destyn, and Maurice, and a younger sister named Hanneaf.Diggins-Smith loved playing basketball as a young girl, and during her high school years in Washington High School in South Bend, she joined their basketball team and became one of its best players. Skylay actually led her team through many state championship games, which saw  her named to the all-state first team in 2007, 2008 and 2009. Other achievements included the Naismith Prep Player of the Year, McDonald’s All-American selection, Gatorade National Player of the Year, and Gatorade Female Athlete of the Year.Aside from excelling in sports, Diggins-Smith also succeeded in her studies, earning High Academic Honors as a senior and also became a member of the National Honor Society.

Diggins-Smith continued her passion for basketball during college, choosing to study for a bachelor’s degree in management-entrepreneurship at Notre Dame’s Mendoza College of Business, and at the same time received plenty of accolades for playing college ball.As the Notre Dame’s point guard, Diggins-Smith helped the team to three Final Fours and two Consecutive NCAA championship appearances. She also won two Nancy Lieberman Awards, a recognition given to the nation’s top guard; she is one of only three players to have ever received the recognition twice.

In 2013 Diggins-Smith was drafted into the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA), picked third overall by the Tulsa Shock. The following year, she was named to the All-Rookie Team, and was later on also named WNBA All-Star for the first time. Before the season 2014 ended, she won the year’s WNBA Most Improved Player Award.

Unfortunately, Diggins-Smith missed most of the 2015 and 2016 season after suffering a torn ACL. She came back in 2017 with the newly named Dallas Wings, and played all 34 games of the season, then was voted into the WNBA All-Star Game.

In terms of her personal life, Diggins-Smith eventually married longtime boyfriend Daniel Smith, who also attended Notre Dame, when the two tied the knot in 2017. Diggins-Smith is also a philanthropist, advocating against childhood obesity. She hosts a camp around the world for boys and girls from grades 2 through 12 called “Shoot 4 the Sky.” She also has a program called Skylar’s Scholar, where she recognizes outstanding teams from various places.
